Strike While the Iron’s Hot

hot appetizers on table

Scott’s Addition is infamous for its high concentration of breweries and barcades. Thanks to Wood & Iron Game Day, now, there’s finally a place to watch the game instead of playing the games. Nestled on Roseneath Rd. between the Veil and Tazza Kitchen, the sports bar and restaurant has a dual-level patio (one floor is covered) and a hefty list of drink and appetizer options, making it a top shot for a COVID-friendly happy hour.

The bar has all your usual suspects plus some unique options like sangria, seven different varieties of crushes, and a house-made spiked seltzer. On the night we visited, everyone in the group ordered an item of the “Crushes and Smashes” list. I mean, how can you resist when there are seven different options, and they’re all half off during happy hour? The mango smash we sipped on was light and refreshing and was so tasty we ended up ordering a second.

The food menu feels like it’s out of a drunk person’s dream, with everything from burger & wing combos (yes, that’s a burger with a side of wings) to pizza rolls to chicken and waffles. We ordered nachos, hand-dipped chicken tenders with Cajun fries, and of course, we couldn’t resist their signature cheesesteak egg rolls. The nachos were stacked high, but we all agreed a higher topping to chip ratio would have been appreciated. The chicken tenders were moist, and you could tell they were freshly breaded in-house. The tenders paired perfectly with the buffalo sauce, honey mustard, and house-made ranch we got on the side (thanks to the RVA Dine & Drink Facebook group for the ranch recommendation). The cheesesteak egg rolls were by far the favorite of the group. The cheesesteak filling was incredibly tasty and made even better by the queso dipping sauce.

It’s safe to say, Wood & Iron Game Day will fill a void in the Scott’s Addition neighborhood, and the hour-long wait for a table on the night we went was an indicator that it’s off to a successful start. Check out their happy hour Monday-Friday from 2-7 pm. During it, you’ll get ½ off house wine, ½ off craft, specialty & local drafts, $1 off domestic drafts, ½ off rail highballs, ½ crushes & smashes, ½ off specialty cocktails.
