postbellum outdoor signage

Postbellum is probably one of the more underappreciated happy hours in the Fan. However, we’re here to tell you that with its rooftop deck, covered patio around the back, and pretty extensive happy hour menu, you won’t go wrong!

As of now, reservations are required, which honestly is our favorite part about COVID-19 precautions because we no longer have to worry about getting there early for a prime rooftop spot or being shoulder-to-shoulder with enthusiastic fresh 21-year-old college students. Not to mention, their other sanitation policies were way more thorough than most other restaurants we have been to. A few things that stood out were that all patrons were required to wait outside until their table is ready, and upon entry, you’re immediately directed to a bathroom to wash your hands. Also, a server takes your order and answers your questions, but you’re instructed to bus your own dishes.

We made a reservation on the rooftop for the first Friday of the fall season and it was perfect! Since happy hour food is kind of our thing, we decided to try out their $4 truffle fries and $6 wings. They had an array of sauces so we had to try a few (c’mon it was only $6). We went with the bourbon BBQ and hot miso flavors. They were both very distinct, so we were glad we opted for two. The bourbon BBQ was the classic wing flavor and the hot miso had a spicy, Asian kick to it. As an added bonus, the wings are gluten free and to accommodate everyone they also have vegan wings available. We also have to sincerely apologize because the truffle fries were so excellently seasoned and drizzled in honey that we literally ate them all before even remembering to take a picture of the masterpiece. Pictured to the right is just one of our orders of wings (bourbon BBQ).

After we got a good base of food in, we ordered their specialty “Postbellum Punch.” The drink consists of rum, grand marnier, raspberry and peach liqueur, and pineapple juice. And because the clock was close to striking 6 pm we ordered 3 of them total and then a Potter’s Virginia Cider as a palate cleanser. We’re not the biggest fan of rum, but the tropical flavors mixed together made it into a delicious cocktail that we both enjoyed.

If you are looking for good deals on some snacks and drinks along with good views in the Fan, then Postbellum is the right choice! Their happy hour is Wednesday through Friday from 5-6pm with discounts on select appetizers, ½ off Virginia drafts, and $6 Postbellum punch (their signature house cocktail).
